A Tale About Best Friends

Oct 21, 2024

Does it feel odd to talk about best friends when you’re an adult? Because for me, I have high quality friends. They’re amazing, these humans. But I find as an adult at this point in the game of life, that there are role players that are BFFs too. Not to mention establishing a hierarchy among any of my friends just feels, well, crummy.

My best friend from college, Andy, he and his wife have two boys the same age as my kids. They both graduated from the same school as I did. We live hours and lifetimes apart, but every year, in the week or two before Christmas, for at least as long as our kids have been alive, we’ve met for an annual lunch. I look forward to that lunch all year long. It’s a beautiful friendship, one day a year, for over half our lives.

My high school girls, they’re a heck of a squad. I’m so proud of each of them. We came from this tiny little town in the middle of Michigan and now we’re spread around the globe and the tie that binds us is the group chat where, largely, we lament the cell phone policies of our kids’ schools. We get together once every few years – this year was Chicago in the summer. I’d wanted to write about the trip then, but life got in the way. These women are smart, funny, accomplished. And after 35+ years of friendship, we still make time with each other a priority. My God, what a thing we’ve accomplished.

My Mom is a best friend. She listens to the recap of every day in the life – how the kids are, how the business is. She listens to it all, offers her opinion (which I love and drives me bonkers, too) and supports me no matter what.

There’s my work BFFs who are just phenomenal women who care about this place as much as I do. And that’s saying something.

There’s my everything, everywhere, all at once bestie – life ebbs and flows but we’ve known each other and spent summers together forever. And now, our kids do it too. And I’ll bet all the money in my pockets that their kids will one day as well.

The thing is, when we created that Best Friends candle so many years ago, those role players may have been different (though many were the same) but the fulfillment these friendships bring to my life is the same. The scent – like so many of my friends – has stood the test of time. Turbulent days, memorable moments, dark nights and brighter days.

I hope you enjoy your best friends – and shoot them a text right NOW. Cherish each of them.

Warmly Yours,

Kristin
